The Ken Smith Story

Ken Smith was born in 1958 in New Jersey. The youngest of five children, his fear of the world developed early. He spent much of the 1960s huddled behind the living room drapes. His early literary influences included Ripley's Believe It or Not books and Mad magazine.

Ken was graduated in 1980 from Rowan University with a degree in Communications. At Rowan, he was the editor-in-chief of Venue, the school's troublemaking student opinion publication. This experience deluded him into thinking he would get a good job on graduation.

Ken has watered plants in Philadelphia, produced a TV talk show in Hollywood, edited an office furniture magazine in Manhattan, dealt blackjack in Atlantic City, and censored films in Singapore. His first book was published in 1986; his latest, Junk English 2, in 2004.

Ken's previous books include the original Junk English, Mental Hygiene: Classroom Films 1945-1970, Raw Deal: Horrible and Ironic Stories of Forgotten Americans; Ken's Guide to the Bible; and The New Roadside America (written with Doug Kirby and Mike Wilkins).
